Spiral Shelter

Shelter

Spiral Shelter was our entry for the world bamboo design competition. The idea was to develop a structure that can be easily installed and dismantled as emergency housing. Something that is robust and reusable instead of temporary tents that are thrown out after use and add waste to the environment.

The design is based on Phyllotaxis, which is the arrangement of leaves and stem found in nature. The resulting form is a parabolic dome, which is commonly used in traditional architecture because of its strength and ability to dissipate load efficiently.

The shelter is 4m in diameter and 3m high. It is suitable as a semi-permanent structure for 2 people. The structural frame of the shelter is made from 5 cm diameter bamboo poles, which are connected to a steel ring at the top.
